CNSC Approves Renewal of AECL's Chalk River Site Operating Licence
 
Chalk River, 2011 October 28 — Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) is pleased to report that the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has approved its application to renew the operating licence for the Chalk River Laboratories Site for a period of 5 years.
 
The new licence goes into effect November 1, 2011 and is valid until October 31, 2016. The previous 63-month licence expires on October 31, 2011.

This afternoon, NRG brought the High Flux Reactor (HFR) back on-line after carrying out repairs on a cooling water pipe. This signals the resumption of the production of crucial medical isotopes and nuclear research activities.

HFR Updates No. 9, August 2010

Rebuilding after successful repair works

After the successful repair of the High Flux Reactor cooling water pipes, the project team has worked in recent weeks on rebuilding the interior of the reactor vessel, the subpile room (the room directly under the core) and the additional control systems. There have been no safety incidents during the repair period and the radiation dose levels for internal and external employees have remained well below the planned limits.

Chalk River Information Bulletin

(2010 August 20) The following information bulletin is in accordance with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL).

AECL reports that as part of NRU return to service activities, a planned reactor shut down is scheduled for early next week. 

During this planned outage, AECL will remove specialized start-up instrumentation used for NRU’s restart and conduct post return to service testing.

(2010 August 18) The following information bulletin is in accordance with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL).

AECL reports that it has harvested the first Molybdenum-99 isotopes from the NRU and that the reactor is in steady operation.

AECL has issued a video news release and photo available via CNW’s Broadcast On-Demand to provide more information on the NRU Return to Service.

(2010 August 17) The following information bulletin is in accordance with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL) ongoing commitment to voluntary public disclosure of events related to the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL).

AECL reports that it has concluded low-power testing on the NRU reactor. As a result, the reactor is now operating at high power and can begin to create medical isotopes. 
 
AECL will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.

AECL reports that progress continues with NRU return-to-service activities. 

Tests on the main heavy water system referenced in last week’s update and return-to-service activities for all 35 NRU auxiliary systems are now complete.
